I have a 1999 48 SPL Lower Unit (Drive shaft # 433067) and the splines on it are not square at the ends, but rather are tapered somewhat. But on the bottom half inch or so they are squared. I don't have another Lower unit from that year to compare it to, but it appears this is the way it is made. The metal does not appear to have been worn down in any way. Can anyone confirm if the splines are made this way for this model.
Also, the gears won't turn by hand but the unit has sat up for 10+ years. The unit worked when pulled out of the water. Should an oil change and putting it in gear once mounted do the trick?
