short shaft, non-tiller, electric start.

Any ideas of weight.... I'm guessing 175# from wrestling it around the shop.

Any way to convert these to a tiller model? Are these good motors? (I realize that's subjective, but generally compared to 40's over the years)

I just got the motor new. (yep.. new - dealer tags still hanging on it)- couldn't resist but not sure yet what to use it on.

You're not too far off. I have a 79 55hp johnson and it weighs 189 non tiller electric start. I don't know if yours has the same block w/smaller or single carb but i would have a problem saying it weighs 175 ish.

90 40hp. about 190 add 30 for elec st tilt and trim.
Good motors basic design dates back to the early 50s.If there is a boss for a tiller it may be possible. There is the throttle and shift linkage and a start a kill switch to deal with.Might be easier to add a stick steer to the boat.
Doesn't require a console. You might check with a dealer for a tiller kit.

Dry weight is between 180 and 219 pounds. The 219 pound model has power trim and tilt. This info is available from the NADA guides site.

Yep, 175# sounds about right. I was looking at a '94 40hp tiller about a month or so ago. I changed my mind because of the added weight and plus I would want power tilt and trim with a 40hp motor.
I believe you can convert it to tiller, but I think you have replace the steering bracket with a tiller type. You're probably looking at about $250 in parts.

thanks! - I was thinking this would be like earlier motor where the whole lower engine pan was different, but I see the steering "tongue" where the tiller arrangement bolts on...very cool.
... looks like an easy conversion but the conversion kits appear to be a much later thing.... 1990 would require all individual parts to be pieced together-so I will keep an eye out for a donor parts motor for the tiller.

Being a new motor...I'm debating in my mind if I should find a VRO tank for it, or just forget it and premix....I'm leaning towards just premixing from the get-go.
