I have a 1990 175 Johnson with water coming pouring out of the cowl.
Water pressure is still decent.
Water is coming out of a hole on the back side of the power head down at the bottom. This happened a few months ago and I found a metal plug about the diamater of a large pencil and a 1/2 inch think that fit snugly into the hole. So I pushed it in part way and took care of the problem for a few months. I noticed the water again and the plug must have pushed out.
I cannot find the plug.

Am I doing the right thing by putting in this plug???

If so, what part number is this plug. I've tried explaining this to a couple people at the dealership and they don't know what I'm talking about. I also cannot find the plug on BRP parts catalog.

Thanks for any help.

This happened on my 83 when first started after winter storage. My guess is that a small amount of water froze and pushed it out. I put mine back in with red loctite and it has been fine for the past two years. Believe it is part of the exhaust adapter and does not appear to be sold separately. I also don't see the part listed on any of the catalogs as a replacement part. I wouldn't run it till you replace it. The amount of water that pours out may prevent the block from filling completely to the top cylinders. I'd probably go hunting for it by removing the misdsection exhaust covers.

it is a alternate place for a tale tell, or water pressure pick up. believe it is a 1/8 npt thread pipe thread. home depot should have a brass plug, use a little telfon tape.

Thanks guys.
Couldn't find what I needed at Home Depot, but after digging around the motor I found the plug. It's 7/8" in diamater and about 1/2" thick.

I wrapped with teflon tape and pushed it in as far as I could.
Hopefully it holds better this time.

that sounds like a welch plug, that needs to be replaced. not just put back in. basically a freeze plug. lets get the expert on this one. notifying him.

The plug is not threaded, but thick and tapered to the hole. I also would be concerned that the tape will not hold it properly-long term. Clean the edges of the plug and the mating surface on the exhaust adapter, then: Put some red threadlocker on it and tap it back into place. Use a hammer and gently secure it. If you continue to have the problem you could reinsert the plug, then use a sharp chisel to deform the mating surfaces to better secrue it. Or, pull the lower cowl, drill the hole to uniform size, tap it an put a threaded plug in it.
