I have an 1990 150hp evinrude thats giving me problems. It will not fire sometimes, but other times it fires great. Heres what Ive done. When it doesn't fire, I can unhook my main connector, from the controlls to the motor and jump the starter and it will fire up perfectly. Once it fires the first time, you can re-connect the plug and it will fire up with the key switch then. It will work pretty much all evening. Then the next morning or so, it does the same thing. Today, I was suspecting a faulty emergency cutoff switch on the controll, it wouldn't fire, so I took the shifter apart and looked at the emergency kill switch. It has 3 wires instead of two like the manual shows, a blackish brown one, and 2 black with green stripes. Anyway, I didn't really do anything but when I put it back together, it fired up perfectly. I may add that I have tried unplugging the wires on the motor that I think go to the kill switch on the motor(ground). There is 5 single wires that plug. I tried to get fire when I individually unplugged them, but no fire until the big red main plug.. Any suggestions?? Can I bypass the emergency kill switch by the 2 black and green wires?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Howdy, SS

I suspect that your neutral start switch is at fault or that you are not centering the control.

Good luck. :)

I thought of that at first, but when it isn't in neutral, it will not turn over at all. Im turning over, but not firing. The emergency saftey switch does just that, when I take the clip off, it will turn over and over, with no fire, just as it does when it messes up. Im not sure this is it though, but Im wondering how to bypass it. I have 3 wires, my manual shows 2. Im thinking the 2 matching wires are the ones to jump, but dont want to somehow blow a powerpack by being ignorant of the exact wires. Thanks for the comment though.

What happens when you turn the ignition switch off or pull the kill switch is you ground the powerpack through the black and yellow wire(s). I'll bet if you look, one of those two black and yellow wires on the kill switch goes to a "M" terminal on yout ignition switch. I'd think your problem is most likely in the ignition switch.

c/6

Hooty

I will definitely look at this tomorrow. Im still puzzled why it fires after you unconnect and then reconnect the plug. You have to jump across the starter for it to work, but then when you plug it in and hit the key, it does perfect. I think confusion is setting in.. Where would be the best place to find an ignition switch, Local Dealer?? Also, I have been looking into changing out the whole controll. Ive been looking for some controlls on the net, but strike out. Mine is for a center console with tilt and trim, key and emergency kill switch. Any ideas on where to look?? If I go with just the ignition and emergency kill switch, is there a brand that someone would reccommend??

It did go to the "M" terminal. I still dont know why there are 3 wires. It should be just a switch thet when opens it kills juice. I cant understand it.

Nope. It don' work that away. When you kill the engine, you close the circuit and ground out the powerpack. The black wire on the other 'M' terminal, on the switch, is a ground wire, so when you turn the engine off or pull the kill switch, you ground the power wire to the powerpack. You have a problem with your switch. It's staying grounded and when you unplug the cable, you open that grounding circuit and the engine starts.

c/6

Hooty
