1989 OMC V6 distributor shaft gear

A friend of mine has a 1989 OMC V6 that quit running. Found the distributor shaft gear is worn down to not turning the distributor.
Is this a special gear or would any 198X Chevy V6 distributor gear fit & work correctly ?

any GM distributor gear should work. however it the distributor side is worn, you should look to see if the cam side is too.

Something wore that gear. I would check the bushings in the distributor to make sure they haven't worn oblong allowing distributor shaft wobble. Simply replacing the gear may only result in its failure again in a short time.

thanks silvertip. i'll pass that advice along. I don't know how much is invested in this rig or his long term plans for it but the right thing to do may be to install a new distributor assembly converting it to an electronic system.
