This is my first boat/motor and I will admit that I know very little when it comes to service and basics. I recently spent $280 getting the motor tuned up and it has been performing considerably better. With that said, there is one pretty serious problem I run into every time I take the boat out.
The first time I fire up the motor after launching, it runs perfectly and for as long as I want. I pull the choke and let it run for about 15 seconds, put the choke back in and run it in neutral for a minute. It is smooth running after that for as long as I want during the first trip.
After turning off the motor to fish my first spot, the motor will never run well again. When I turn it on again and try to twist the throttle to full speed, it runs about 80% slower than when I first turned on the motor. My 9.9 runs at about 22 mph, then after the first trip it probably only goes at 7 mph. I have to go slowly through the entirely lake for the rest of the day, occasionally the motor will randomly "catch" again and start going at full speed but it's pretty rare. It's almost like a car that will not get out of first gear. I have zero trouble starting the motor up, but getting it to full speed is always an issue. The man who sold me the boat said to always put 1 cup (8 oz) of 2 stroke oil in the 3 gallon tank, so I have always followed this rule. My hypothesis is that it's an issue with the throttle since the motor sounds nice and cranks up easily without fail, just goes very slow. I have no idea though, any help would be great!
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated, I have had this motor for a year now and still haven't got this thing to run very well. Thanks for your help!
