thanks in advance for all and any response.no fire to the plugs.where do i go to start checking.some body tell what happens first.i think the flywheel turns and the magnet picks up power to go to the coil pack and then the power goes to the spark plug coils and then to the spark plug.am i any where close and does this motor have a trigger.i took this motor off my center console and it was hooked up to a gear box to work the throttle.i put the tiller back on to sell the motor and now i have no fire to the plugs.i dont see where anything i did had anything to do with it not getting fire.any help would be great and thanks in advance,Bill

Start by disconnecting the stop button and the emergency kill switch and see if spark returns. One or the other going bad is the most common problem.

It should have a stop switch in the end of the tiller handle.

If you have a OHM meter you cn check that system quite easily here the OHM values
Stator--Red coil lead to black coil lead 3200 t0 3800 OHMs/Rx1000= 3.2 to 3.8
Trigger- red lead to white trigger lead and black to black 650 to 850 OHMS/Rx100=6,5 to 8.5
If these readings are OK then the switchbox is bad

No, don't turn the flywheel while testing for OHM values. if you had a DVA that tests for peak voltage you would need to turn the engine over but with a OHM meter you are simply testing the windings for resistance not voltage output.

Do you have a red or a black stator? Makes a difference in the ohms values of the different parts

No, it's not the magnets, it's the stator itself.
You REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, need to get an OEM service manual. You don't have enough info here to know what the proper ohm specs are. They are different between the red and black stators.
Even then, the ohms tests could be fine, but the tests using the DVA meter could pinpoint the problem. The DVA is NOT part of a multimeter.

Don, there are no red or black stators for the 6 thru 15HP engines that is true on only the larger engines and even if his engine has the newer stator with differant color wire the OHM spec are the same.

Re: 1989 mercury 8 hp,no fire,help please

Bob, I was just reading from the manual (90-827242R02), and it gave information for both Black and Red stators. So I just kind of assumed that they used both. Wonder why they list the red one if it wasn't used??

Re: 1989 mercury 8 hp,no fire,help please

I stand corrected Don, Although I guess have never seen one that was red in color after serial number OG760299 Mercury 6 to 15HP did use a stator with a single winding which is what the larger red stators are, they eliminated the low speed winding
