I bought a boat 5 hours away that has a 1989 Mercury 60 hp outboard on it. Besides talking to the owner, I also talked to the dealer that has cared for the motor over the past three years. I feel pretty good about it. That being said, I have usually owned Evinrude outboards, and don't know much about the "personalities" of Mercury's. In reading the posts on this and other forums, I do have some concerns that I would like some input on.

Oil injection system- should I keep it or pre-mix? I lean to the side of pre-mix. How would a guy go about converting it?

Top cylinder problems- Seems I hear of this alot. What can be done so that it does not become a problem? It sounds like it is typically caused by a block in the cooling system. Anything to watch out for? Should a guy add another temp gauge?

After reading of the Merc's, I am a bit spooked. Any opinions on these items, or any other items, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 1989 Mercury 60HP help

Post the full year and model or at least serial number of the engine. That way the Guru's here will know what you have.

You will find good and bad engines in every mfg. How it lasts is largely dependant on its care and feeding, and your care in operating. Take care of it by sensible usage and proper operation, keep the maintenance up, and make sure it has good fuel and oil reaching the cylinders and it will last a long time!
