All,

I am a proud new boat owner of a beat up 1989 Astro Quickfire 18fs. I bought this from a fishing buddy knowing it will be a project. I have already started cleaning it up. I am getting ready to rebuild the carburetor this weekend. I have never rebuilt a 2 stroke carb before and do not have the service manual.

My plan is to note the location of the mixture adjustments and try to replicate that upon rebuild. Can anyone give me a more accurate answer to this project?

After the carbs are rebuilt if it still not running properly I will be checking fuel pump. Then on to the gorilla in the room, the flooring and oxidation of the gelcoating.

All information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

When doing the fuel sysem don't try to piecemeal to job do it all at once clean the carbs, rebuild the fuel pump and update the fuel lines, you will need inlet needls and gasket sets for the carbs they will be much cheaper than carb kit which have many unneeded parts and a fuel pump kit both are avalably on this site. If you clean the carbs and the lines are bad the crud will go back it to the carbs you just cleaned, Here's a link for the carbs to check out the parts.

Carb floats for that carb are no longer available. Recommend you keep that in mind when rebuilding

Re: 1989 Mercury 150 WH-40 Carburetor

Ok got the boat on the water with the wife for a test before an annual fishing trip with some buddies. It starts and idles great. I can keep it low rpms, as soon as I try to open up throttle it dies on me. After a while of frustration and tinkering I was able to get wot by holding down the choke(key) and using the throttle simultaneously.

I know this is not right and wanted to hear any thoughts. I did realize after I got home that the fuel pump was gunked up.

Is there anything of all might recommend to get this issue resolved?

Also does anyone have the correct settings for the carb? I don't have the service manual.

sounds like incorrect float settings or dirty main jets

Ok I went out to the lake and the motor is running worse than last time... I rebuilt the carbs, rebuilt the fuel pump put new hoses on and it seems as though it has a hard time supplying constant fuel.

If I choke it and run then neutral idle speed all the way it will start and scream for about 30 seconds then slowly dies off...

What do you all think I screwed up.. Did I tighten the jets and everything too much on the carbs? Did I not rebuild the fuel pump properly? Ay help would be greatly appreciated.

it's a black max 150 1989 serial #oc183705. And the carbs are wh48's not 40's
