I have a 1989 Johnsoon 150 V6. Sorry I don't know the technical terms for all these parts. When I turn the key, the gear that the starter kicks up to engage the flywheel doesn't kick up high enough to engage the flywheel.
The battery has a full charge, and it doesn't do it all the time, probably 65% of the time. Also, sometimes when it engages, it only engages for a short time, not long enough to start.
It will usually eventually start, but I'm selling the boat and can't sell it this way.
I'm assuming this is the starter. Am I correct? Or could it be the solenoid, or even the battery? I did fully charge the battery.
Tell me where to start and how to test the starter.
Thanks much.

First check the battery if you haven't.
Second lubricate the starter drive gear so that it slides up and down easy.
Third check the starter motor connections and battery cables/connections.
Fourth check the starter motor.

Sounds like the Bendix drive gear needs cleaning and lubricating. Use some WD-40 and a toothbrush to clean up the shaft good and then lightly lubricate it. Even if this fixes it, it dosn't hurt to go over the other stuff either.

Jack is right on. I had the same problem with my '90 115. WD 40 to lubricate the Bendix fixed it right up.

i am still having a similar problem only the bendix gear goes up and stays up, then grinding a bit.. not turning motor over enough to start.. i cleaned the gear, tested battery( which is less than a month old) could this be the solenoid? is there a way i can jump over it to test? if it is the solenoid can i use a part for a ford(i heard that i could somewhere)
