Hoping someone can provide some guidance here... per the subject line, I have a 1989 Johnson GT 150 on a 361V Ranger. Had it out for the first time last Sunday and after a while I noticed gas dripping out of the bottom of the outboard comprtment into the water. Luckily, was still close to the ramp and was able to trailer the boat and head home.

When I pulled the engine cover and inspected, I could see gas leaking out of seal between the bottom two carbs and fuel bowls...I ordered 3 new (aluminum) bowls to replace the plastic ones on there. Waiting on a couple other parts and should be good to go there...

Now for my other gas leak - I see gas leaking out of where the middle carb attaches to the intake manifold at two bolts... see pictures attached. Any idea(s) on the issue and how to correct?? Has anyone else experienced this before?

Thanks for any feedback!
Joe

The pics are hard for me to look at on the phone....

If you mean you are getting gas leaking from a mounting bolt then you have a really flooded motor...not likely.

Are the carbs tightened to the manifold? Is the gasket there? Are, if any, recirculation lines unhooked? If you squeeze the bulb does it get hard? If you continue to lightly squeeze does the bulb compress and can you then further diagnose leaks?

In picture # 2 it appears to show leakage around the reed block mounting screw.------Intake manifold would have to be removed for further investigation.------Not a serious leak.----Would be covered by the carburetor mounting gasket.------Up to you to decide on this extra work.

Thanks guys for your feedback. Prior to noticing the fuel bowl/carb leaks, I had priming the bulb and obviously it would feel firm for a minute then go soft (there's a joke in there somewhere... ha!) But, i definitely flooded the motor by doing this coupled with using the choke to try to start. Hoping it's just that the motor flooded...

Racerone - that's helpful. hoping that the rebuilt carbs/fuel bowls will eliminate the problem...if not, i guess ill remove the intake manifold to see what the deal is.

Faztbullet - yes, luckily i noticed that on the spec sheet for the new bowls.

As an update - cleaned the carbs, put new floats and various other pieces in, and put the new bowls on yesterday evening (along with all new gaskets). so far so good. didn't want to wake the neighbors by the time i finished up last night, so i didn't start the motor, but the bulb held firm all night (which it hasn't done in at least my last few outings)...a good sign!
