1989 johnson 30hp long shaft lower unit problem

I just aquired a 1989 johnson 30hp for a good price .It had a bad lower unit so I bought a good one from a local shop . My problem is I cant get it on Does the shift rod go in front or back of the water tube. is there any trick to this?

You have to remove the water screens from both sides of the lower unit to get access to the shift rod connector.

Look at the waterpump housing, there is a little o-ring.<br />You must stick the shift rod into the little hole of the ring.<br />Apply some lubricant first to the end, inserting it takes some force.<br />You have to stick the watertube and the spacer first into the upper unit.<br />Then You will see, the shift rod only will fit in one way (I don't know whether it's behind or in front of the watertube right now), but it self explains.<br /><br />Nordy
