I am new to boating. I just bought an older boat its a 1989 Imperial 2150 with a 4.3 mercruiser and I'm trying to start it and all I get is a click from the sylenoid. Any help would be appreciated I have no idea what to look for. Thank you in advance

First, Welcome aboard

I assume you bought the boat non-running?

a click from the solenoid could be any of the following:
bad battery
bad connections
bad pilot relay
bad starter
hydro locked motor
rust locked motor
damaged drive

start with the basics. have the battery load tested. clean all the connections in the boat.

additionally, your boat is coming up on 35 years old. look for signs of rot in the transom and stringers.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,..... Start by cleaning both ends of both battery cables to shiny metal Clean,....
Corrosion may allow voltage, but block amperage from the battery to the starter / block,....
The slave solenoid should be on top of the motor, look for yellow/ red wires,.... it feeds the starter's solenoid,....

I tried to ask the guy I bought it from to walk me through the "start up" process but he does not want to help at all even though he said he would. But that's neither here nor there... Do boats start like a car, just turn the key and they are supposed to crank? I know its a silly question but I know NOTHING about boats. Sorry in advance

I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong in testart up process before I investigate a possible problem.

They start like a 1960 truck

But without a fast-idle cam

So if on the trailer, have the muffs in and the hose on full

Press the throttle only button, pump twice. Then with the throttle about 1/4 way and turn the key. Once it fires, back off the throttle to about 1000 RPM.

After a few minutes, pull back to neutral

Sorry, I'm wondering if it something wrong in the shifter.. neutral switch or something like that.. I tried it the way you said and I get a click and a sort of like a quiet whistling sound from the slave sylenoid area. Does that make any sense?
