I was out trolling this past weekend and when I started home my motor started knocking at high revs. I quickly powered down and limped home on idle. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be? I had a problem shifting into reverse when I left the ramp that morning, but it never occured agian, could this be related? Engine has new fuel system and getting oil. The engine will start first crank, and idles fine. A faint knock that gets louder with the increase in throttle is the problem. I guess I'm heading for the shop.

Re: 1989 excel g 225 yammy knocking

Well I just got the bad news  , The mechanic said it sounded like a bad piston rod bearing. He indicated that it may go bad in a year or in a week, so I told him to repair the bearing. He also said he would replace all the rings, hone the cylinder if needed, and repalce all neccesary seals. I only ran the motor long enough to get me in after I heard the knocking so it should not have too much wear on the crankshaft. He quoted me $1100-$1400. Is this a fair price and are there any other items to have serviced while he has it apart? The shift shaft maybe? Any help would be great!!

Though he may be right, for a big ticket repair a second opinion might be worthwhile. Lots of things can make a knocking sound.
