Hello all,

I am no engine expert so I figured I would inquire on this forum and see if anyone could possibly help me out. I took my boat out a few weeks ago and started having problems with the entire boat. Frist we had an electrical issue with salt water somehow getting in the battery terminal and the engin started smoking much more then normal. Needless to say we decided to call it a day. Yesterday I took the boat out again after fixing our electrial issues. The boat was still billowing smoke at a much higher rate; we still decided to troll around. About 2 hours into the day I noticed that the engine was consuming much more oil then it normally does and by the end of the day we had used 1gal of oil to apx 20 gallons of fuel.

My question is how could the engine be recieving more then double the oil that it should be.

I have a few possible ideas of what could be the problem but would like to see what yall think.

1. I could have an air leak in the fuel hose somewhere and hoses need to be replaced. (Im not sure how air in the fuel line would make it pump mor oil.)

2. We have been having electrial issues with our throttle box. At certain points it will continuously sound the start beep and you have to fiddle with the key to get it to stop. Is it possible that the trottle box is making the vro inject too much oil?

Either case there is a lot of oil around the hoses and at the bottom of the engine when you lift off the cover. Im not worried about anything too catostrofic as we used the boat the hole day yesterday and the egine was running all day from 3am-8pm.

On a final note the boat does not seem to smoke at all when traveling at higher RPMs. Also when traveling at the higher rpms and then dropping it down to trolling speed it takes apx 5min before the engin starts to smoke again. Either case a 20:1 oil mixture needs to be fixed. Thanks in advance for your help.

Nothing in the control box or alarm system can affect the fuel/oil pump. It is totally controlled by an air motor that runs from the pulse from the crankcase... and the mechanical ratios of the inner workings that pump oil and fuel.

If you're not familiar with this article, check it out: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html.

I think your thought on the air leak is worth looking at. From the article:

(excessive smoking and oil consumption indicates) "an air leak somewhere in the boat's fuel system causing "foamy" fuel instead of a solid column of liquid. This aerated gasoline has less volume and less resistance causing the fuel pump diaphragm to cycle faster. Each cycle pulses oil into the foamy mix, increasing the oil:fuel ratio to the carbs creating a smoky exhaust."
