just wondering if any one knows if the water cooled voltage reg in these models are the way to go. i have had the second one fail in the life of the motor. the first failed under warranty[ burnt out ]the second one is now over voltage .i have checked the stator using a 1000v megger meter, no shorts found and the copper coils are not damaged so the stator is fine the over voltage of 17v aprox seems to happen when the motor is hot .the tacometer is not reading correctly either so i am sure to regulator is stuffed . the two regulators so far have been original mercury parts i have heard they are not as good as the CDI brand is this true,or should i change to the two regulator system that is in the models prior 1989 and then after 1992 it would seem mercury had a rethink on this problem . can any one through a little light on the subject thanks

Lose tha "water cooled" regulator. Its expensive and just not very good. Think CDI makes a "kit" with 40 amp regulation tha will adapt to your stator......Pre '89 had 16 amp with one regulator systems (can usually run this without tha reg w/no problem) or 9 amp with no regulator.............
