I'm new here but i have a question regarding my 88 HP shifting. Is it normal to hear a slight grinding noise while shifting from neutral to reverse, or neutral to forward. What would cause this if it is a problem?

motor runs good but am concerned with the grinding, not very loud or anything just not smooth like my 72 johnson was.

thanks

Terry

That grinding you hear is the lobes of the clutch dog and gears wearing away; try to engage the forward and reverse faster and see if that helps; never engage slowly. good luck

What Will said. Don't "ease" it into either gear. "Put" it into gear (nicer word for 'slam'). She was designed to be in or out of gear, not ramped either way. A solid "clunk" is normal.
