Motor's run great all year, but died mid-run as if somebody threw a switch. All electronics kept functioning fine, as did the cranking motor. While putting back on the kicker, I noticed one of the battery leads was somewhat loose. Tightened it; no effect.
1989 3-cyl. 80hp Merc. serial #OC163865
Compression's right around 110 on all cyls.
No spark from any coil.
Rectifier failed the second step of the continuity test.
Stator test (between red and blue) reads 7000; manual states 3600-4200 is normal. Stator test between blue and ground reads 8000; manual states 90-140 is normal. Uh oh.
Trigger leads tested as follows: brown--3500; white--3000; violet--2500 when tested against the white/black lead (in my case, black). Manual states 1100-1400 is the normal range for all trigger leads.
All coils showed continuity between + and - posts when tested against plug lead. Manueal states no continuity should exist.
Am I mistaken, or has the inadvertent omission of a lockwasher on a battery terminal just fried my rectifier, stator, trigger, all three coils, and possibly the switch box?
Neutral start switch (yellow/red) tested okay...disconnected the tilt switch with no effect. Ditto cleaning up some of the connections.
Am I missing something really simple here, or am I simply in for a real expensive and/or time consuming repair job?
Thanks for any advice you might throw my way!
