1989 80hp quit suddenly--no spark

Motor's run great all year, but died mid-run as if somebody threw a switch. All electronics kept functioning fine, as did the cranking motor. While putting back on the kicker, I noticed one of the battery leads was somewhat loose. Tightened it; no effect.

1989 3-cyl. 80hp Merc. serial #OC163865

Compression's right around 110 on all cyls.

No spark from any coil.

Rectifier failed the second step of the continuity test.

Stator test (between red and blue) reads 7000; manual states 3600-4200 is normal. Stator test between blue and ground reads 8000; manual states 90-140 is normal. Uh oh.

Trigger leads tested as follows: brown--3500; white--3000; violet--2500 when tested against the white/black lead (in my case, black). Manual states 1100-1400 is the normal range for all trigger leads.

All coils showed continuity between + and - posts when tested against plug lead. Manueal states no continuity should exist.

Am I mistaken, or has the inadvertent omission of a lockwasher on a battery terminal just fried my rectifier, stator, trigger, all three coils, and possibly the switch box?

Neutral start switch (yellow/red) tested okay...disconnected the tilt switch with no effect. Ditto cleaning up some of the connections.

Am I missing something really simple here, or am I simply in for a real expensive and/or time consuming repair job?

Thanks for any advice you might throw my way!

No, to the loose connection burning out everything but could have burned the rectifier out, have you disconnrcted the black/yellow wire at the switch box to eleminate a short harness and switch, if nor try it and if you still have no spark disconnect the rectifier to see if it's shorted

Thanks, Laddies...

Disconnected the red/yellow from the switchbox--still no fire.

Then disconnected the rectifier (2 red, 2 yellow)--still no fire.

I'm a bit at sea as to where to go from here...

Took it to a Merc. Mechanic in Friday Harbor. Diagnosis:

Bad trigger numbers ("...out of #3," he said) and switchbox. Additionally found a cracked magnet in the flywheel, which on a Merc. rep's advice he advises me to replace, though it will effectively double the repair bill.

Reckon I'll be into it for at least $1,000...but isn't that what BOAT stands for? (Bring Out Another Thousand...).
