1989 60hp Mercury needle valve sticking

Is the needle valve supposed to be somehow attached or hooked to the float linkage? I am frequently finding the needle valve stuck in the closed position so no fuel is getting into the carb. Any schematics or details would be greatly appreciated.

If you just recently replaced the needle valve this can be a common problem. Sometimes there may be a small burr sticking out at the bottom of the rubber part where it meets the needle.

Also, if it is newly replaced the valve may stick until the it gets saturated with gas/oil mix.

This engine has two carbs. Neither has had needles replaced anytime recently. Many people have told me that there should be some kind of wire or clip that connects the needle to the float linkage to help pull the needle down when the float drops. I can't find a schematic that shows this for this engine. Which is correct?

Gravity is the only thing that opens the needle valve on mine. There is no clip. The bottom of the needle rests on the linkage.

Based on the fact that a needle/valve kit is only $6, change it out and see if that helps.

Here is a schematic of the carb
