I have been researching a similar problem and many times the issue is an ignition problem, specifically the switch box. You might test for fire.

Hello,
First spend $10 and get a repair CD for your outboard off Ebay like I did. I have the same problem with my Mercury 150 EFI. After following the troubleshooting chart of my repair CD I found that mine has a bad Trigger assy. Test your coils, if your boat has them. Using insulated pliers, pull the spark plug boots one by one with the engine running. My #3 and #6 coils were not firing because of the trigger. It really an only be one of a few things; coils, switch box, stator, or trigger. Good luck. I don't know much, but I know a few things. Email me direct if you have anymore questions, I will help if I can. jrpotts01@yahoo.com
