1989 40hp evinrude charging system ????

im having doubts that my charging system is working correctly. ive looked in the servive book and all i can find out is that it might have a 4amp charging system, does this sound right? seems like a small charging system. reason i dint think its working right is with motor off and all lights on and radio on i get 12.3 volts after starting and motor about 1800 rpm it only goes to 12.7v shouldnt it be about 13-14 v? or does it only get that much voltage at a higher rpm?

I would start by cleaning all connections, dont just look at them, make them SHINE! Voltage drop testing is an ideal test to find faulty wiring.

Short of that, test your stator as per your manual.

Let us know what you find.
