Well I have 1400 hrs on my alternator and thought as the cold winds blow. I should freshen her up. So I took it to Hite Rebuild to get it done. Thankfully I asked how much first. They quoted 187.00. I said I can buy a new factory Mercruiser one for that. So I headed out the door. This place did a 300.00 starter for 90.00 in August for me. So now what.

I found one on RockAuto delivered to my door for 117.00 brand new. Its not painted but it states for marine use or ignition protected.

After looking at how much work it would be to paint it black rustoleum, I decided to leave well enough alone. I wouldn't think there would be issues in fresh water environments.

If the question is, can you use it, then the answer is yes. The J1171 is the standard for marine ignition products.

On another note; 1400 hours wouldn't bother me to keep using. Also you can replace the bearings, brushes and regulator/diodes for about 30 to 50 bucks. The shop you took it to is way high

My sheave is severely worn also. Looked up the part # and they wanted 39.00 for just that.
Yeah I had one done on my v8 2 years ago at Lake Cumberland. Guy said go over there and have a coffee. It will be done when your done. 60 dollars out the door. We have no tradesmen like that here that I know of.
But the later in your reply is what I wanted to do. I guess it's all money and time. Thanks.

Know what you mean, oh well.

Speaking of Lake Cumberland Area or nearby, there is a place called Stevens Generator in Monticello and they do things right and at a much lower price. Had several items redone over the years

Hey my brother has a place right by there on the Lake at Grider Hill Marina if you are familiar. That may have been where I went for the repair but I cant remember. There are lots of skilled marine mechanics in that area. Its awesome.
