1988 volvo twist prop outdrives

I have spent the last couple of decades working on mercs and omc but know little or nothing about volvo's. I am looking at a boat with twin volvo duoprop outdrives with 350's and I am wondering what peoples experience with these are. Are there specific areas that I should be looking at? These are probably the first generation design as the boat is a 1988. They have been run exclusively in fresh water. The boat is a steal right now, but not if these things are worthless.



Thanks guys, your insights are very important to my decision making process. The two units have been replaced within the last 8 years. One three years ago the other 7. One of the engines is a crate engine brand new and the other is 7 years old with about 400 hrs. He claims they have holly 680's (?) carbs. and have been cleaned two years ago and the boat sat on stands last year.

Cptmello, 28ft cabin cruiser. 10.5ft beam, should top out at around 54mph if I can believe the owner.

I have links to the Volvo manuals, but need to know what model engine and drives exactly. One engine SN would even work.

Even being a Devote Merc. Fanatic,.... I'd Jump All over that.....

Those are the drives that spawned the Bravos....

I've owned two different Volvos '69 AQ130 w/ 270 outdrive and currently an '88 AQ231 repowered to an AQ260 w/ 275 outdrive.

I have had good luck with both.

A boat with twin duoprops sound fantastic. Twin SBC 350 and duoprops, best of both worlds!!

Note to DonS... Ever seen a manual for a 275 outdrive? I've seen 270 not 275.

What type/Size of boat are you looking at?
