My set ring on my engine is apparently stuck. If I unhook the link, the throttle works properly. However, when I connect it, the throttle will not move forward. Is there any way to "unstick" the set ring? Or, are there any problems associated with leaving the linkage off?

Pull the flywheel and see why the ring will not move. The engine will not run correctly with the linkage off.

Re: 1988 Tohatsu M60B

Thanks. It may be the weekend before I can get to it, but I will pull the fly wheel and take a look. Is there anything that I should look for in particular? I suspect that it is rusted (coastal SC). What would be the best way to free it if that is the case? I would hate to break it if I tried to pry it loose.

Also, what sort of problems do you see with disconnecting the set ring? Does this govern the amount of oil injected into the carbs?

Sorry for all of the questions and I appreciate the help.

The linkage from the ring goes directly to the advance lever. So no connection, no gas. I've never seen one stuck except from a loose screw that backed out causing one to jam.

I removed the linkage to the set ring and ran the engine and it ran fine. It throttled up and down. Of course, this was with the muffs on and not in the water. I still have not had a chance to pull the fly wheel. Is there any reason why the throttle would work properly with the linkage to the set-ring removed?

The linkage from the set ring controls the timing directly. While the engine will start and you can advance the throttle, the engine will not run correctly. You have to fix the problem with the set ring. You can not ignore it.

A littl bit of WD40 and pry bar can work wonders sometimes. The set ring is no longer sticking and the engine appears to working properly. Time to put it in the water (no wait, I still need to fix the trailer). Oh the joys of owning an old boat.

Thanks for all of your help.
