Ok, it's time once again to replace the impeller on my 1988 Yammie ProV150 (what a wonderful motor!).

This is my first time doing the work and I have a couple of questions.

First, the grommet, o-ring, and impeller will be replaced, that's a given. If the upper housing is cracked, etc., it'll be replaced. However, the procedures I've seen don't mention the gasket under the outer plate. Wouldn't this be a good time to replace that?

The kits I've seen don't include that, further suggesting that most people don't replace that while doing a normal impeller replacement.

The only other thing I am interested about is how much the lower unit weighs, and how to handle it while off the power head.

Anything I'm forgetting?

Thanks!
Batkins

Not normally necessary to replace that gasket unless you take the plate off. Place the pump housing on a flat piece and see if it sits flat with no warpage. If warped, replace. The gearcase weighs about 40 pounds. Handle carefully with both hands. Easier to handle and reinstall if motor is trimmed all of the way up so mid section helps relieve the weight.

Thanks Ray. I assumed that, since I was already there, and the gasket is likely original, and therefore 16 years old, it would be a good idea to replace. If it's not necessary, I won't mess with it then.

Thanks!

Re: 1988 Prov150 Impeller replacement questions

I just replaced the kit on my 92 pro v 150. The kit did include the gasket, both o rings, new key, bolts, impeller, plate and impeller cup, and also new dowl pins. cost appx 60$. The hardest thing was holding the o ring on the plastic pump housing in place while gently turning the shaft clockwise to spin impeller in place. What saved was using several small smears of grease to hold the o ring in place. I also sprayed some lube on the impeller to ease insertion. All went well.
I removed it by my self, but used my brother to re-install, 4 hands easier then 2. good luck.
