My 1988 king cobra seems to be slipping out of gear. With loud screeching and smell of burnt rubber.
It started after reassembling stern drive.

did you align the motor? if not, that rubber smell may be the coupler eating itself.

are you running the motor on the muffs, or at the boat ramp? the other screeching noise could be your impeller eating itself from lack of water. if you tried to suck water from a bucket, you toasted your impeller.

also, on the king cobra, did you fill with the correct fluid in the correct manor, if not, the screeching could be the gears eating themselves.

I did not align the motor.... Oh my... I dint know I needed to or how.
And i fill the oil properly and took it and put her on the water..
and barely made it back to the shire before I lost all propulsion.

Look in your bilge. If you see black dust in there your coupler is toast. Time to pull the engine. Btw, did you have a hard time mounting the drive? If you did it was out of alignment.
