1988 Mercury 50hp 2 stroke part indentification

I need help identifying a hose hanging from the gear box or lower unit. I inherited this motor and don't have a repair manual. It was an oil injection but it has been removed, mixing 50:1 now in tank. Tank and hoses were removed at a certified shop, and instructed to just mix. The black hose hanging out on the front, transom side, has a fitting or barb sticking out, but I can't see where it would go. Is it a left over from the oil injection? The hose has been damaged, mouse chewed?, and will need to be replaced if significant. I have only seen it on a YouTube rebuild and the tech never mentioned the hose or why it was there.

It could be a speedo tube and fitting which would be connected to a hole on the leading edge of the lower unit.
