What is the maximum temperature a 1988 Mercury 175 outboard should get to without it being a concern?

Or what is the max temperature it should not go over?

I just installed a new temperature gauge, one with numbers, on my boat. The old temperature gauge just had a meter with C and H, cold and hot, but you could never tell what the temperature was. The engine seemed to heat up a bit at headway speed.

This Mercury seems to change temperature a lot depending on RPM, but I believe that is the way they are designed, popper valve, or something like that.

Thanks.

It depends on what you are measuring, Water or Metal.... Your temp. sensor should be measuring metal on the cylinder head, unless someone installed a different style at a later time...

Anyway, assuming you have the original style measuring metal, 180F-190F is not out of the question at WOT speeds. Your overheat sensor is set up to go off at 240F by the way....
