1988 Mercury 100 4 cyl, voltage problem?

Can anyone tell me what voltage the regulator is supposed to deliver?

I'm getting 13.5 at idle and 14 at 1000 rpm. Then I get higher and higher readings when wide open - 15 to 16 volts.

None of my gauges seem to work correctly - trim and temp never move - tach sometimes reads 1000's high - even voltmeter is off.

I would hope the Voltage Reg would keep the voltage at mid 13's...You might want to replace it as it does not seem to regulate voltage very well.

TMD

Wakerider,

You have just demonstrated why replicating the same post to more forums is a very bad idea.

Nevertheless, I'll follow up on my answer in 'Outboards':

If your voltage is above 14.5 volts when the motor runs - also idle - the voltage regulator has to be replaced.
