Hello All
Been a while since I posted. My 1988 Stingray has behaved admirably over the last two seasons, and have not had any issues that I could not quickly resolve. No issues, that is, until last Sunday.
Boat in the water for the first start of the day, pump the throttle with shifter disengaged, turn the key, no starter. All the gauges jump as I would expect, but the starter doesn't spin or even engage. I tried it a couple of times, shifted back into neutral and tried, cycled the gear shift forward and back to neutral, back to shifter disengaged and throttle positioned forward, nothing. Went back to the motor to see if anything looked unusual (didn't touch anything) didn't see anything weird, went back to the helm, tried the key again, and the motor started right up. For the rest of the day (shut down several times to inflate tubes, anchor and swim, go to other locations, and finally took boat back to ramp at the end of the day) the problem did not repeat. I haven't been out again to try to recreate the problem. The only unusual maintenance I did this year was to re-adjust the shift cables, as I was having a problem where going from reverse to neutral the gear would not disengage (It would go from forward to neutral with no problem so I thought it was a misadjustment in the shift cable, but its all within spec). I changed the lower shift cable two years ago and the upper shift cable last year. (Lower shift cable because I was having similar problems shifting out of reverse, upper shift cable because it broke. I was hoping someone could help me diagnose the problem or give me a starting point for troubleshooting. My gut tells me maybe the starter solenoid might be starting to go, but I don't want to just start throwing parts at it until I have a better idea of what might have failed. Any help or insight you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.
