1988 merc 80hp

Bear with me because I have only owned one motor (Johnson 50hp 1975)Friend is offering to sell me '88 merc 80hp. Other than attempting to mount it on the transom,how can i tell if it will fit current boat (1975 starcraft 15') with johnson long shaft, i believe 20". Also, how is a Merc 1988 as far as quality. Asking price is $700<br />Thanks!

sounds fair and reasonable<br /><br />i paid 800 for my 1990 merc 90hp, just like yours. almost exactly like yours.<br /><br />yes, it will fit your boat 100 %, but you will need new controls and prop, as your evinrude controls and prop wont fit.

I have a Merc 1987 80hp on 17CC and average 1500 statute miles a year with it in the Chesapeake Bay. It will mount on your boat, no problem. Controls may be found at local boat yard. Price is about blue-book. Check compression!! Mine's never left me stranded but it can be quirky (mine got caught in a 86 to 87 changeover and Mercury has no idea about the early 87 models - no configuration control). The 1988 should be fine. The only oil sensor for that engine is low oil. Mechanical system with several single point failure areas. I disconnected the system and mix my own - a pain but cheaper than a new power head.
