So I have a 1988 3cyl 70HP Merc on a 14.5' fibreglass Fleetline. The boat was taken off trailer over winter for a trailer rebuild, and was running perfect last time it was in the water. After about 3 months of storage we got it back on the trailer filled with fresh fuel and took it to the water. As soon as I pulled away from the dock it seemed slow but did a few mins of cruising to warm it up before trying more throttle.

At full throttle it hits 18km/h, where it would normally get around 55-58km/h. At one point while doing laps it started to get a bit better, up to 30 km/h, but once we stopped and took off again it was back to slow again. The tach hasn't worked for years, but we believe it's the tack itself as the charging circuit is still working fine and it had a new rectifier last summer. My first thought was a fuel blockage or gummed up carbs but after around 10 minutes of motoring at "full throttle" it had used approx 8 liters of gas, a lot more than usual!

I've checked plugs, they are fine, stripped fuel pump and that seems fine. All the research I've done seems to point to a timing issue but I cant' see how that would change suddenly with the boat not being used. It's a pain as it starts and idles fine, revs fine in neutral so the only way to know anything we try has worked is to tow it to the lake and test.

Time to check compression and spark. Does it sound like it was revving up to near full throttle? if so, maybe prop is slipping? Timing wouldn't normally change, with out some manual intervention on the motor linkage. Advance the throttle and make sure the carbs open and the trigger moves.

Doesn't sound like it's revving properly either, just sounds like its at half throttle. I've tried manually opening carbs while in the water but it makes no difference, with them wide open it doesn't rev any more. The trigger moves right to the stop when throttle in full foward.

no doubt you need to do a compression and spark check as suggested. Faulty ignition system most likely.

Re: 1988 Merc 70hp has no power

Problem solved thanks guys. After taking the airbox off the front of the carbs to make sure they are all opening, turns out the bottom one wasn't. The plastic linkage that joins it to the other two carbs had snapped right where one of the adjusting screw holes are. Looks as though the screw had been over tightened at some stage cracking it and it finally gave up. Now to try find one here in NZ, our local dealers are ridiculously priced on the few parts I've looked at so far compared to the likes of the iboats store.

You can take the linkage apart and super glue it back together. It will hold if you drill small holes in both pieces and use small wire as pins above and below the break after adjusting the linkage for the carb setting. Have same motor and fixed it several years ago this way.
Otherwise contact some of the salvage yards listed in the forum to see if they have one to replace the broken one. JMO
