Hello. I just traded my 16' Lund for my first I/O in a 22' Starcrafty Islander. I test drove the boat for about 15 minutes before buying, it started right up cold and ran perfectly, ran it again for another 1/2 hour when I got it home with no problems. It then sat for a few weeks while I got it all cleaned up and set up the way I needed it. Yesterday took it out for a cruise and it again ran absolutely perfect for about 2 1/2 straight hours. About a mile out from the marina on the way back in I was cruising about 3k rpms and it completely cut out for about 3 seconds and then continued to run fine. A minute later it cut out again for a little longer but seemed to keep running fine when the throttle was backed down to about 1500rpms. After idling for a minute, I could take back off and get on plane but after a few seconds it would bog down again but run fine at idle. The boat has fresh gas now but wasn't ran much before I bought it and still had last years fuel in it when I brought it home. One more probably unrelated tidbit, I have to wiggle the throttle lever back and forth a bit when trying to start it to get the sarter to engage.

Welcome to iboats....:)
I would change the water separating fuel filter....
Fuel will get water in it from hanging around....;)
Problem #2 sounds like the neutral safety switch...
You need to post the year, make , model for even a guess how to fix that, other than by-passing it....

Thanks for the info. Boat is a 1988 Starcraft Islander with Mercruiser 4.3 175hp and Alpha One Drive. Can anyone clue me in to the location of the fuel filter/filters as well as the water seperator?

Bob,

It could be this.

I have a 1988 Celebrity with a 3.0 Mercruiser Alpha One and have had same exact issue. Finally solved it on my own - after having several mechanics try lots of stuff.

On my boat I found (purely by chance) that there is a brass fitting on the end of the fuel pickup hose inside the gas tank and within that brass fitting is a screen. It was clogged - Boat would run fine for a while - then bog down and sometimes stall. After pulling off the fitting and simply blowing out the gunk - the engine is running beautiful!

Where the fuel line comes out of the gas tank there is a fitting - on my boat it is square shaped - I used a sink basin wrench to get at it and unscrew it. You need to first shut off fuel line and remove from fitting coming from tank. You may also need to remove the hose fitting for the fuel line first as it may get in the way of unscrewing the fitting from the tank. Attached to that fitting going into the tank is the fuel pickup hose and when you pull it out you will see the brass fitting. If that is clogged just pull off the fitting - blow it out and off you go.

Good Luck!
