I just bought this motor. Starts and runs, rough at times, RPMs change when the spitting starts. 1988 Johnson 48 SPL spitting fuel out of #36 Idle port also spitting out of bottom of tube in the throat that attaches to the float bowl. Upper carb only. Also motor pumps water really well out of the tell tail, should I replace the water pump just because I just got it or monitor temp when running for a while?

If you mean rpm change when water begins to spit out of relief ports on leg, imo that is normal (t.stat opening). I would put in a new impeller, disassemble and soak carbs -- clean ALL openings and put in carb kits. Check the reeds when the carbs are off.

I have the carb kits coming for the rebuild. Was planning on doing that. I had read about the reeds on older posts so I will inspect when the carbs are off. Never heard of the scuffed piston before. I will change the impeller just to be sure. Thanks and I will let you know after the carb rebuild.
