I have been looking through a number of the posts here at iBoats, I think that I have finally determined that my rectifier is bad. The motor is a 1988 Johnson 140 VRO, serial number J140TLCCM.

There is a CDI Rectifier available here (part 193-4205). My question is, how difficult is it to replace the rectifier? I would consider myself a "moderate" when it comes to mechanical capabilities, especially on my boat motor. My problem is that I live in Bethel, Alaska...which means if I screw something up, there isn't a store to go to and buy a new part.

Has anyone installed a rectifier in a 2 cycle Johnson, preferably a 4 cylinder similar to mine? How long did it take? Anything that you would consider a "trick" to make it easier or to not screw it up?

Thanks,

Three or four wires and two mounting screws, typically. Not a tough job.

You have to remove the powerpack to get to the rectifier. If you are careful about the placement of all of the wiring, it's not very difficult, but plan on it taking an hour. Take pictures as you move along - it will help.

You should have a factory manual on hand for the color wiring diagram if nothing else.

You can definitely remove the powerpack without removing the flywheel, but I don't remember if you can get the rectifier out without removing it.
