1988 Force Fuel Pump Rebuild (85 hp)

Hi all,

I just bought my first boat with this motor (1988 85hp Force outboard). I cannot start it without using starting fluid (ether) when it is cold. After that, no problems on starting. So, after research on here I saw a number of people recommended replacing the fuel pump diaphragm.

So, I usually over do things and ordered parts. I decided to rebuild the whole fuel pump and ordered all the gaskets for it (see attached diagram). I also ordered the three fuel pump valves (#24 on the Fuel Pump Diagram). But, after I have everything apart, I have some questions:

1) When I pull the fuel pump body (#12) off, I can see the fuel valves in the back. And one of them is held in with two screws. No problem on that one. But, the other two, how do you replace them? Are they pressed in and do you just pry them out and tap the new ones in?
2) The diagram and parts listing shows there is only one fuel pump valve gasket needed. The fuel valve I pulled out has one on it. But, if I pull the other valves out, will there be gaskets under them too? If so, I'll need to order more.
3) Since the motor runs great and only has problems starting when it is cold, am I nuts? Should I just replace the diaphragm and call it good?

Thanks all in advance!!

The problem is not the fuel pump! Now that you have it apart, just replace the center button valve and gasket and replace the diaphragm/gasket.

Since you are new to Force, are you using the correct starting procedure? For a cold start, you MUST put the control handle in warm-up/fast idle position. Depending upon the control box, you either push in the center button and advance the control handle as far as it will go, or pull out the whole handle about 1/4 inch and advance it. Then, while turning the key to start, push in and hold to choke the engine. She should fire right up.

Starting fluid does not have ant lubricant and washes oil off surfaces. Continued use is bad for the engine.

Do a compression test too.
I've only seen one pump that needed new check valves.
The valve came apart and was setting in there in pieces?
It was still working, I replaced it and never had another problem.
Like FrankA suggests use the starting procedures, most don't hold the key "IN" when trying to start.
Pushing and releasing does nothing. It needs to be held in while the motors turning over.

Re: 1988 Force Fuel Pump Rebuild (85 hp)

sounds good guys. I'll just replace the diaphram and center button valve.

As far as the starting procedure, I do pull out on the throttle and push it all the way forward. I also push the key in to close the choke plate. And, verified that the choke plates all close. So, since I was replacing the impeller I figured I'd try another step towards fixing this problem.

Thanks for your advice and I'll see how things go. Looks like it might be a week or two before I can move forward on this. Out of town for work.

But, just out of curiosity, how are those other valves installed/removed?

Thanks again all.

I'll add, primer bulb up firm. The second stage valve can be removed with a hooked piece of metal. The first stage can be removed with a punch from the other side. Pressed in being sure to touch only the outer rim with tool (proper size socket?) till bottomed out.

Well, work plans changed, so I got a chance to tinker again. I decided to not move forward with replacing the button valves and just replaced the diaphragm and adjacent gasket. Also had an opportunity to take it out to the lake and fire the engine up.

She didn't start right away, but did start without starting fluid (yeah). After warmed up, she started real easy and right away.

Just wanted to update everyone. Thanks all.

Hi Man
Am having same issue and let me give you one to try for next time. You will need a second set of hands so take someone with you
And do be careful.
While she is dead cold and won't start have someon standing by to start the engine. Remove the engine cover and have them push the choke in and hold it. Notice the choke pulls a bar that has your choke valves and opens them on all carbs. Place your finger on the very top of the bar and push down to ensure the choke is opening all the way. If it has slight play it may need adjustment and alignment.
Now while holding it down all the way have your other set of hands crank it. If it coughs or starts it needs adjustment by following the service manual for adjusting the choke.
This happened on mine and now after adjustment she runs like a champ and start up cold.

Good luck!
