I just made an offer on a salt water boat with twin 1988 Crusader 220HP 305's. Fresh water cooled. Rigged as straight inboards. The boat only has 450 hours. The current owner claims that he has replaced the risers, waterpump, and rubber before as needed.

I'm a fresh water guy. What should I be looking for if we make a deal? I intend to pay for a survey.

if its freshwater cooled, its advantagous at some point to change the system over so the risers are fresh cooled too. this involves moving the spacer block up between the riser and elbow, as opposed to between the manifold and riser. there will more than likely be signs of a recent riser/elbow job as most mechanics dont get that "factory look", meaning rust at gasket edges, nuts not being painted etc..

also check for belt dust on the front of the motors. that style raw pump is notorious for slight misalignment due to the slot/bolt setup. easily corrected if an issue.

always nice if you can run your hand across the bottom/back of the pan to check for a leaky rear main seal too...

solid motors, tons of last gen Crusaders in my marina..
