It is important that you do your homework on this one. Afterall, it is your $$$.

When you have an hour or so for it, get a cold drink, lean back and search for 'Bayliner' on this site.

After reading all you'll have a bunch of opinions and experiences (pro & contra) to base your decision on.

Howdy, FD.

Bayliners are beautiful boats. Great styling, good layout, great pricing, etc., BUT:

The B'liners I have examined are poorly detailed with cheap materials, and I have heard too many horror stories about rot and poor internal construction. Fifteen years is about the right time for those problems to bite you.

I suggest that you look for a boat brand with a better reputation.

Good luck. :)

Ditto, ditto, ......

Bayliners are typically considered the "Yugo"s of the boating world - great price and they look great from the outside, but you are getting what you are paying for.

For the same money or only slightly more, you should be able to get a much better boat, even if it is a couple years older. It will be well worth a good long search before you spend your money!

Good luck!

the craftsmanship on a bliner is not too much different from other boats of that year.
even high end boats if not taken care of will still need work.
-
i looked at alot of new boats this past year, other than looking pretty with that high price tag, there is still alot more they can do with the craftsmanship.
18 to 30k boats- you would not belive all the flaws ive seen. & it didnt take much looking either.
-
only you can decide if its worth your time and money.

. They are good boats, the construction is somewhat minimalist but they are a more value type craft, so just remember you are getting what you pay for, they are not as stoutly constructed as many others in higher price ranges, but dont let anyone tell you they are no good. Bayliner has been building boats for a long time and have great relationships with many of thier vendors, such as US Marine which produces thier glass, instruments, swim platforms etc. This is reflected in the price of the craft as well. I like them so much because 1. you get alot of boat for your money
2. they look great
3. they are easy to work on
4. parts are very easy to find, and cheap.
The earlier statement of Bayliner is the Yugo of the boating world I think is one persons biast opinion. The best thing for you to do is if you want to buy the boat, drive it check it out in great detail know what your getting. Most importantly, spend the money to get it surveyed. On larger craft especially, you may miss something that a pro will catch i.e. a rotten floor Bayliners are notorious for this. I'll bet that 8 out of 10 bayliners more than 5 years old will have a soft floor. Hand in hand with a soft floor you may find gel coat blistering, which is serious at a certain stage. Anyway, good luck.

Every one likes thier own brand the best. I'm guilty. But I did my homework, And even with all of the pro's and con's I choose bayliner. Sure I would like a chris craft too, It's a different class of boat, maybe when I get out of the poorhouse.

I'll limit my $.02 to the motor. A 305 is marginal for a boat that size. Probably OK if just you and a minimum fuel load. However with a family, tanks topped off and maybe a friend or two it will probably be struggleing to get on a plane (if it can!). I had a 27' Byliner with a 350 and it was a slug.

Also if that is the original motor be prepared to put some substantial $ aside for repairs - like risers, manifolds, etc, etc.

If you want the bayliner, Get the Bayliner. Make sure you get a survey on it. I am not saying this because it is a Bayliner, I am saying this because it is a BOAT. Bayliners are good boats. This is really the only forum which promotes "Bayliner Bashing" that I have found. Other boaters I know, dont care what brand of boat you drive. As long as you enjoy it.
Some People here are pompous azzholios. If you post about a bayliner here you just get bashed for it. Better try a Bayliners owners club for info.

Have the boat checked, and buy it.

I agree about the 305. My 19' Caravelle with the 302 could definitely use more power, so something that long would be struggling to say the least.

I was out at Costco yesterday looking at their Bayliners (yes, they sell boats here), and found one 20' with a 3.0. Holy moly.

There's that same boat (but with a 5.7 volvo) two fingers down from us at our marina. Although Bayliner has a bit of a bad reputation, they love the boat and it has been a trouble free unit for them. I like it too.

the SeaCraft is a heavy 25 footer with a mildly worked 302 - and she can really move, at 5400 RPM she was showing 50 - of course, shes a 4 bolt main, balanced and blueprinted beast with a non stock cam ... but she idles with only a slight thump and very docile, not a radical motor at all
But it was 215 horses dead stock, and somewhere around 275 now, and a FORD ... Chevy motors are dirt cheap to punch up, but I wouldnt breathe too heavy on a 305, but a 350 would be a bolt in deal, could also go with a 400 chevy and put a torker cam in and go with a bigger wheel, just a matter of the outdrive taking the higher torque

wont be as reliable as the Ford mind ya, but should be fast!

:p
