Engine and boat new to me as of a few months ago. I gave her the full treatment cause she had been sitting in a barn for 2 years. First trip out was Tuesday evening. It is a pleasure to operate. Should the alarm self-test? It doesn't. Will it alert me to oil injection issues as well as overheat like an OMC from that era? I marked the oil tank and it used 1 pint exactly w/ roughly 5 gals of gas at a steady cruising speed for about an hour. That's a little more oil than I expected, but I'm not complaining.

I've got a 1989 90hp. Most likely the same engine (I'm not a pro by any means). I don't get any self-test alarm on mine. I do know it will alert for overheat, but not sure about the oil injection issue. If you have the standard Yamaha RPM & Trim gage, it also has an indicator for full\half\low oil indicators. If you don't have one of those, you can probably pick one up pretty easily. If you're really worried about the oil, you could bypass the oil injection and mix the oil yourself. For me, I trust this old engine as it's been a steady and reliable one for the years I've had it. Enjoy your new boat!

There is not a self-test alarm.
For the low oil level and high temperature there is the alarm.
