1988 85 hp Fuel Recirculation System

Hi All, Without pulling everything apart and checking the screens and reed valves is there a way to test the system to make sure it is operating properly. My engine goes into a funk sometimes of hard starting, spitting at idle and poor acceleration after running great for like 30 minutes cruising at 20mph. Then after a while of fighting it, it will get back to cruising again and seem fine. Thanks, O.T.

Check for water in the fuel.Make sure the compression is ok. Use a light and check the carb and past it.
Check the fuel pump diaphram.J
