Hey, I have a 1988 Bayliner with a 120 hp L drive that my brother and I purchased not knowing the nightmare that they are, the boat has no reverse and our local mechanic says that it needs a new drive.(A new shift cable has been installed already) Unfortunately there are none available to our knowledge. Just wondering if anyone knows where to find one or if there are any parts that would work off a different year or model?? The mechanic thinks he might be able to but doesn't want to order a part in and find out it doesnt work. Any suggestions or ideas?? The mechanic said that it is a crossover year from Chrysler to merc and that is why it is such a pain to find parts

Re: 1988 120hp L drive with no reverse

Your best bet will be searching the internet, not only ebay - but with something so rare, google searches and the like. It is not a chrysler/merc crossover issue at all, US Marine bought the chrysler outboard business, and designed this L drive partially from scratch, using some chrysler lower unit bits. There is a chance that parts from a 120hp force outboard lower might fit, but I sure don't know. Keep posting everywhere you can and hopefully you will find some other L drive owners to help you.

the mechanic adjusted the cable "really tight" as he says and it seems to work good, just a chatter in the handle when putting into revers(normal???) and the outdrive raises up when in reverse. I am gonna try to remove the wires for the power trim and tilt and wire them upto 2 different switches for up and down, good idea????
