I'm having an issue with my boat I just purchased it's a 165hp mercruiser inboard engine when I start the boat with the choke the boat will not idle without stalling out unless I keep the choke constantly running, When I go to take it out of choke and into gear you have to do so quickly or the motor stalls and also seems if I go to slow of a speed near idle she stalls I need advice on what it could be and how to repair it when I bought it I was told it just had new plugs and wires and routine maintenance done.

first thing to do when you buy a 'new' boat is a full service including all the fluids and the drive service which is impeller seal tests and oil then check alignment and grease unis gimbal bearing hinge pins and swivel pins don't forget the trailer wheel bearings and rollers and the winch and hitch part of the engine service is checking the compressions setting the timing and all the carb adjustments as the boat is that old I would also be stripping and cleaning and resetting the carb thats probably your problem and new plugs and points rotor car and condenser and don't believe a thing the seller told you they will tell you anything they need to to sell the boat it's usually a pack of lies.

we do ask that when you make a new thread to include the important information about the engine we dont need to know about the boat just engine model number of cylinders as the 165 could be 4 or 6 and most important the serial number so we can look at exactly what you are looking at.

in addition to the great information above

your new to you boat sounds like you have fuel system issues and potentially a lower shift cable issue.

so, get a factory manual (not a seloc or haynes or clymer) and start by doing all the maintenance and repairs you need to do prior to using the boat.

Boat shifts fine just dies going from choke to drive unless you accelerate as soon as you shift.
