Interesting- as our 1987 searay steering just went out this last weekend- :( --the steering wheel just spins freely and easily--I'm hoping it's as easy as having to add some hydraulic fluid....should I be checking for leaks and if so how. Also interested in what type of fluid and how much is necessary.

Hi. I have an 89 180. Not much different at all. If it's a Teleflex/Seastar/Morse, use Seastar hydraulic fluid PN#HA5430.
You can also use Texaco H015, Mobil Aero HFA, Chevron Aviation Fluid A, or any fluids meetingMil H5606C specifications (straight from the Teleflex manual).
Use 2 quarts for single stations and single cylinder systems, 1 additional quart for each additional helm, cylinder, or auto pilot (also straight from the manual).
Make sure you have an extra body to help with the bleeding procedure. Should be fine after that. The hydraulic system is a sealed unit, so if you're low, chances are there's a leak. I just replaced the seal glands on mine. Not hard at all. Wasn't hard to spot. Had hydraulic fluid puking out whenever the wheel was turned from side to side. Good luck.
