If the problem is that I think it is, You need to hold the prop steady to get it in place or the gears will be out of sink when your putting the bottom on, look at the lower shifter fork piece.

Still alittle asleep so this may not make to much sense, read the manual if you have one.

I had a friend hold the prop in drive while shifter was in drive is there anyway it could still be a half tooth out on the splines it still clicks when turned clock wise and it wasn't before I'm lost I've had the foot off a thousand times put it in drive every time is there a possibility that the lower shift foot and sleeve that goes over the lower shaft wore out?

You removed the entire outdrive right? Does the shifter move freely back and forth? If it does, the wheel on the upper shift shaft lever may have slipped out from between the arms on the shift slider on the end of the shift cable, and it is not pulling the lever forward when you shift to reverse. You can look underneath and see if the top of the intermediate shift shaft is linked properly with the bottom of the upper shift shaft.

Yes I removed the entire out drive but it was working afterwards then had to replace the water pump and now can't get reverse if I slightly push the shift foot with my finger it will lock but still clicks going the opposite way or it will be hard to turn the opposite way

Re: 1987 sea ray Seville shift problem

There are generally only two things that go wrong in a case like yours, where it was working until you split the outdrive and removed the lower. They are: either the intermediate shift shaft went in the lower shift shaft "off a spline" or you lost the ss washer on the lower shift shaft. So push the control lever all the way forward. Try to turn the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE. If it locks you are in forward. Next pull the control lever all the way back to wot reverse, and try to turn the prop CLOCKWISE. If it locks you are in reverse and it is shifting correctly. If the control jams when you pull it back, the lower unit was in reverse rather than forward when you put it back together. If the control moves freely back and forth you probably left off the washer on the lower shift shaft and the intermediate shift shaft has dropped down and not coupling properly with the upper shift shaft.

To make sure it goes back together correctly: When you drop the lower turn the lower shift shaft (short splined shaft in front) all the way CLOCKWISE and turn the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it locks. You are now in forward. Use a bungee to hold CCW pressure on the prop to hold it in F. Put it back together with the intermediate shift shaft pointing straight ahead (with the control handle in forward) and you lower will be correct. Good luck.

If you are sure you put the lower on correctly then the only other assembly problem could be that the shift slide has become disconnected from the the upper shift shaft lever. I think it is time to pull the upper and check. If it only goes into forward then the slide would be in front of the wheel on the lever and pushes it into forward gear but will not pull it back into reverse.
