Hello all,

Sorry if this has already been answered. I looked through and didn’t find anything.

I recently pirchased a 87 Nissan 40HP. It wasn’t running upon purchase and I thought it was a fuel issue. I replaced the carb and fuel filter then it fired right up.

When I dropped it the first time it fired right up. I left the harbor and it ran fine for about a mile. We stopped at the fishing grounds for about 45 min. When going to leave it had issues starting (pull start by the way). Once it stated it sounded healthy at idle. Upon applying throttle the motor would rev up then bog and die. I had to repete the start, run, die procedure until I got back to the harbor.

When I got home I flushed the motor. It started fine, idled fine, and ran fine under throttle. Any idea what may be causing this? Any input will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Any OB running fine at idle or when applying more throttle at neutral is no indication that will run fine once running at load pushing a boat. Are 2 different scenarios. Are grounds from every electrical component in perfectly clean and shiny condition ?

You have a 31 year Jurassic OB, electrical components doesn't last that long. Could have already hidden intermittent issues, works OK when cold, misses when warm, works OK when cooled down to start all over again, a never ending boating nightmare. It's the hardest to diagnose properly and fast.

Need to troubleshoot each electrical components and check if within factory specs. Good Luck!!

Happy Boating

"Jurassic" LMAO The 40C is still one of the most solid engines out there. It's probably a fuel system issue.
