1987 Mercruiser trim limit switch question

there are 2 adjustment caps on my Alpha 1 outdrive. I was wondering which side do I turn to adjust the trim angle ( the outdrive appears to be tilted very inward and down to the street) and which side adjusts the gauge on the dash? The boat is on the trailer now so if standing behind and looking at the boat from the rear, the adjustment cap on the right is the starboard.<br />Thanks

look closely at the switches<br /> one says trim and the other limit. the limit is on the port side and the trim sender is on the stbd. the limit just limits the amount of trim up or out to about 21 inches from anchor to anchor until the trailer function switch is used. have to use something else to limit downward trim. but on an alpha I have never seen excessive down angle

There is alot of anti fouling paint on the switch so I can't read any markings on it. Do you know where I can find out how to limit the downward trim so the outdrive is more horizontal with the rest of the boat?<br />Thanks for the port, starboard info on the switches.

That's Not how it Works......<br />Leave it Alone,...... It's Supposed to be able to Trim Under.......<br />The Limit switch stops you from trimming it Too High,...... Not Too Low......... <br /><br />Do Anything You Want,... The drive is Still going to trim All the way to the Bottom..........

Just had a thought. (you're going to love this one!)<br /><br />You could reconfigure the limit switch so it did act as a lower limit. Then you could do what "Jefrsonco" was wanting. <br /><br />The question I have is 'Why would you want to limit the downward travel anyway?'<br /><br />Chris.........

Bondo has the right answer. Is this your first I/0 ? Most people will start out with the drive trimed as far down as it will go, especially if they are pulling a skier or trying to get on plane as quick as possible, or if they wish to run under plane with the bow down. After you reach plane, tapping the trim switches(at the helm) up a few times will generally result in faster overall speed.

" Thanks for all for the comments. I just thought the outdrive was trimmed inward much further than on other boats I have seen. I mean, there is a very obvious angle inward.

Jeferson, We really do want to help. Is this your first boat with an inboard/outboard ? Are you aware that there is a electrical/hydraulic system that adjusts the angle of the outdrive....from a switch at the helm ?

Re: 1987 Mercruiser trim limit switch question

I suppose another trim limit switch mounted on the stb side could be wired to limit downward trim. Another way to limit trim in, is to disassemble the rams and put a spacer in the bottom of the ram. But as said above it is supposed to be able to trim that far.
