hello i am new to boating as well as boats. i purchased a 1987 thompson w/ an inboard/outboard 165 mercruiser. The trim on the outboard says power trim xl on it. before i bought it the trim didnt work and the guy that owned it was very confused because he remembers bringing it home last year when he winterized it and it worked then. i came back a few days afterwards after he did some work on it and the trim worked. it went up and down. i bought the boat, took it home and now the tilt/trim doesn't work, go figure, it only clicks when i push any button. the boat isn't covered and it has been raining on and off. the trim/tilt motor/solenoid was getting wet, i covered it with a tarp so it doesnt get wet anymore. i came home today and everything is dry so i tried again and it still just clicks. the motor is stuck in the up position. i have been reading other posts and they say that i should check the volts with a multimeter, i plan on maybe purchasing one tomorrow if they arent expensive. i dont know what i am doing and dont have money for a mechanic. is there an easy way to check to see what the problem is? any help for me is greatly appreciated. i bought this boat and have put almost $500. into it and i havent even got it registered yet lol... im at a loss and am itching to get it into the water. please help.
thanx in advance, phill

could be a leaking seal or possibly a bad hose check oil level and inspect all hose,s. Do maintinace as it should have been done regularly. also may be a bad piston,. from what you stated yor switch is working. Hydrolic cannot function without oil you have a leak the trick is to locate the leak if the resivior is empty of hydrolic fluid then ther is a leak! if there IS oil in the reserve tank than you have a bad hydrolic cylinder that needs to be replaced

Gday Krepe,Multimeter costs very little, but your best buy would be a manual for your motor.Get serial number of your motor and post, so someone can direct you to your manual.Had the same prob though mine was bad switch at control.

Leaky seals and bad hoses will not cause it to click. The pump would run, just nothing would happen if the oil level was low.

Here is a link to the OEM service manual. Section 1C details how to check the electrical part of your trim system.
