2 weeks ago ran my 90 at the lake and it ran great, however the tale-tale was spiting very hot water. Trailered immediately ran home to find the impeller shot. Change the entire pump assy. ran it on the muffs with great water pressure now. seem to idle fine never revered it up. Took it back to the lake this past week-end, now she spiting and surging and will not throttle up. Seems to idle ok, with a slight surge every now and again.

Question... Could the newly restored water pressure have blown a gasket somewhere and the engine ingesting water? If so where would be the most likely place to look? Or could this be something else?

I have also noticed that the carb's are leaking slightly, drip-drip every 30 seconds or so. Although I believe that they have been that way for awhile, and I refuse to believe that all of the sudden after a water pump change that I would have a carb problem.

why not? stranger things have been known to happen ;)
Did you test the compression?
Is it possible that you may have over heated the motor?

Compressions fine in all 6 cyl. Seems to spin just fine with all plugs out. the new W/P impeller is making a hellva squeaking noise with out water. But that wouldn't make it run like a 3 legged dog. I don't believe that it overheated, the old impeller was working just not very well.

" the new WP impellers making a helluve squeaking noise without water "
Are you running the motor without water ?

No of course not, just turning the flywheel slowly.

Howdy neighbor!

Start thinking "coincidence" and look for other causes.

Or perhaps it's not warming up as well now? Warm it up at about 1500 in neutral for a few minutes before trying to take off.

-W

Did you not use a little grease on the inside of the cover before pushing it down over the impeller?

I can't find anything else wrong, the only thing left is a blown water gasket somewhere... any idea which one?

And yes I did use lithum grease on the impeller before installation.

You said that it idles fine, but when put into forward it spits, coughs and dies, huh? so this could well be a carb issue or a faulty fuel pump.

Did you turn the prop shaft clockwise as you installed the impeller? it should'nt be making the noises which you've described, so i'm thinking that it is possible that the impeller vanes may not all be facing the same direction.

Blown gasket is HIGHLY unlikely. Water in the cylindes will show up on the plugs. Trust me that your problem prolly lies elsewhere.

The high-speed winding on the stator will cause *exactly* this symptom too. (as well as fuel system issues)

Be carefull not to make a minor problem a major problem.

-W

Looks like the stator's bad, found a testing document that states the resitance between ground and the blue, blue/white wires should be around 6000 ohm's. The blue one is ok at 6200 ohm's but blue/white tests around 1.5 meg.

Really wierd that this just happen to occur right after a water pump change. Maybe a slight overheat on the old pump caused this? any thoughts?

-Jim

Sonomabeetch - I'm right again.

COINCIDENCE......... the enemy of all logical troubleshooting.

If you sacrifice a rubber chicken to the image of Kiekhaefer sacrificing a Jonnyrude over an open flame - these things might not happen. :p

Once in a while, 2 things can break on the same day. I had to replace my upper switchbox after the #3 meltdown. Why? Hellifino?

-W

Grease is bad for the rubber. Use dish soap or even KY jelly as pre-lube. :D

-W
