i HAVE RECENTLY ACQUIRED A 1987 JOHNSON 40 HP. IT RUNS GREAT MID RANGE AND HIGH END. lOW END IDLE AND JUST ABOVE SURGES SOMEWHAT. I TOOK THE CARBS APART AND FOUND SOME CRUDE BUT HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO RUN IT SINCE. THE MAIN CONCERN IS VIBRATION. THE THING BUZZES LIKE A VIBRATOR. THE WIFE SAYS SHE DOESN'T MIND IT BUT I'M KIND OF CONCERNED. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I TRIED CHANGING PROPS AND OUT PUT SHAFT IS STRAIGHT. TORE DOWN THE LOWER UNIT AND FOUND NOTHING MAJOR. NO PLAY IN FLYWHEEL SO CRANK FEELS TIGHT. JRTX4@SPRINTMAIL.COM

Are you sure its coming from under the hood?? I know my motor sounds horible at idle because it is a 2 cylinder and it shakes a bit which rattles the linkage. When I place my hand on the linkage it sounds much better..
