Hey guys,

A friend of mine just bought a 1987 Mako 20 with a 1987 Johnson 140hp V4. It runs good and idles good.

Other than rebuilding the carbs and a tuneup (impeller, plugs, sync, lower gear oil) is there anything we need to pay special attention to?

Thanks for any ideas.

Re: 1987 Johnson 140hp VRO

hello
check to make sure it has the 4 wire VRO. or if the Current VRO pump is over 6 yrs old then change it. check the condition of the oil line and primer bulb at the oil tank. change the pickup assy if its the old brick hard vinyl. and lastly clean the oil tank and check the filter. test all the warning horns as per service manual. make sure the Horn self tests. if its an original power head its a big bore looper. if its the original I would pop the heads and check the aluminium casting around the cyl liner. if its all eaten away dont waste money on it.
good luck and keep posting
